CALM & CONTROL™

Emotional Regulation & Behaviour Stabilization Support

CALM & CONTROL™ is a structured, trauma-informed support program focused on emotional regulation, impulse control, and behavioural stabilization for individuals whose behaviour escalates in response to stress, overwhelm, sensory load, or trauma history.

The program is designed for situations where emotional dysregulation—not intent—drives risk, disruption, or repeated system involvement. It prioritizes safety, predictability, and skill development, creating the conditions necessary for learning, participation, and longer-term stability.

Target Group

Adolescents and adults (16+) with intellectual, developmental, or learning disabilities who experience:

  • Emotional dysregulation or impulsive reactions

  • Escalation linked to trauma exposure, stress, or environmental overload

  • Difficulty tolerating frustration, limits, or change

  • Behavioural incidents that place strain on families, staff, or community settings

CALM & CONTROL™ is particularly appropriate when individuals are not yet ready for insight-based or accountability-focused programming due to limited coping capacity.

Format

  • 4–8 sessions

  • 60–90 minutes per session

  • Individual or small-group delivery

  • Visual, experiential, and low-literacy approaches

  • Flexible pacing based on regulation and tolerance

Core Modules

  1. Understanding Stress, Overwhelm, and Escalation

  2. Recognizing Early Warning Signs and Triggers

  3. Body-Based and Cognitive Regulation Strategies

  4. Impulse Pause and Decision-Delay Skills

  5. Safe Expression of Strong Emotions

  6. Individualized Calm & Support Plan

Modules are adapted to the individual’s communication style, cognitive profile, and lived experience.

Outcomes Documented

  • Improved recognition of emotional and physiological escalation

  • Increased use of coping and self-regulation strategies

  • Reduced frequency and intensity of behavioural incidents

  • Clear support strategies for caregivers and staff

  • Enhanced readiness for further intervention, education, or therapy

Program Outputs & Reporting

CALM & CONTROL™ includes clear, structured documentation focused on engagement, observed skill use, and practical support needs.

Reports may include:

  • Confirmation of attendance and participation

  • Summary of regulation strategies introduced and practiced

  • Observed indicators of improved emotional control or tolerance

  • Identified triggers and effective de-escalation supports

  • Recommendations for environmental adjustments and consistency

Documentation is educational and behavioural in focus, does not assign diagnosis or intent, and is suitable for sharing—where appropriate—to support coordinated care and informed decision-making.

Relationship to Assessment & Other Supports

CALM & CONTROL™ is often recommended following trauma-informed assessment or as a precursor to more insight-based programming, therapy, or accountability-focused interventions.

By stabilizing emotional responses first, the program helps reduce risk, prevent repeated escalation, and create the foundation necessary for meaningful participation in next-step supports.
